'RHOP' Alum Candiace Dillard Bassett Spoke to Karen Huger Before Prison

The Real Housewives of Potomac alum Candiace Dillard Bassett reached out to Karen Huger before her former costar began her prison sentence last month.

Dillard Basset, 38, recently told People that she spoke to Huger, 61, a “few times prior to her going away,” referring to Huger’s February 26 sentencing related to a DUI charge in 2024.

“I’m obviously devastated for her and her family,” the new mom added. “We all know that drinking and driving is not right. We all have the opportunity to make choices, and it’s on all of us to make the right choices, whether that is calling an Uber, sleeping on a couch, walking, whatever it is.”

“So Karen will obviously have time to think about what she has done, but I’m excited for her to serve her time and come out stronger, which I know that she will,” the “Insecure” singer said.

Over the years, the Real Housewives of Potomac series has parted ways with several cast members. Viewers said goodbye to Monique Samuels after her altercation with Candiace Dillard-Bassett during season 5 made her reconsider her time on the show. After joining the series in 2017, Monique and Candiace initially formed a close friendship. Things took […]

Dillard Bassett was part of the RHOP cast from seasons 3 through 8. She announced her departure from the show in March 2024 ahead of season 9.

Last month, Huger was sentenced to two years in jail with one year suspended, meaning she will be incarcerated for one year. She was ordered to report directly to police custody.

The sentencing came after the Bravo star, known as the “Grand Dame” of Potomac, was previously charged with a DUI, a DWI and reckless driving after a March 2024 car accident. She was found guilty on nearly all charges — except the count of driving recklessly — in December 2024.

“Although we are disappointed in the jury’s verdict, we of course respect their decision and appreciate their time hearing our case,” Huger’s lawyer, A. Scott Bolden, said in a statement to People at the time. “We continue to reserve Mrs. Huger’s right to an appeal and intend to fully pursue justice on her behalf. We appreciate your support and prayers for Mrs. Huger and her family at this time.”

RHOP original Gizelle Bryant recently shared that she and her costars have been checking in on Huger’s husband, Ray, 79, since Huger’s sentencing.

“I have reached out to Ray. He’s keeping the circle that’s going to be contacting Karen very tight. As of right now, I’m not on it,” Bryant, 54, said on the March 5 episode of SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “But he’s open.”

“All the ladies have been very concerned about Ray,” Bryant added. “I did tell him, ‘We wanna start sending you food on a weekly basis. We’re gonna take turns.’ He did say he’s overwhelmed with food, no, thank you. He knows we’re here to support in whichever way we can.”
