Lucas Bravo has spent four seasons playing Gabriel on Netflix’s Emily in Paris, but a recent interview suggests he may not be back for a fifth.

In an interview with French outlet Le Figaro posted Thursday, October 24, Bravo, 36, expressed apparent displeasure with the series, terming his character’s on-and-off romance with lead Emily (Lily Collins) “archaic” and that he feels a lack of “freedom” in his role.

He hinted that he is weighing his return for the next season: “Life is short. It takes five months to shoot this series. Do I want to sacrifice them by telling something that does not stimulate me?”

He additionally noted: “I do not want to be a part of a cog that does not tend to take the intelligence of viewers into consideration.”

Bravo told the outlet that the series was “good entertainment” and “an escape,” but objected to the “1990s idea that lovers pull apart, kiss [and] pull apart again.”

“Everything is based on a lack of communication. It’s a bit archaic,” he noted, adding that he would like Gabriel to have more “panache.”
“I don’t really have any freedom,” Bravo, who is currently starring in French film Libre, set for release next month on Amazon Prime, said of the series. “And as people are starting to give it to me elsewhere, I am getting a taste for it.”

Netflix announced last month that it was officially renewing Emily in Paris for a fifth season. The season 4 finale left fans on a cliffhanger when Emily moved on with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) after her relationship with Gabriel puttered out. Gabriel, however, wasn’t ready to let go of a future with Emily and decided to win her back right after she chose to relocate from Paris to Rome.

The show’s creator, Darren Star, gave Deadline in September some thoughts on the role of Gabriel for the upcoming season. “I think Gabriel realized that he doesn’t want to let Emily go so easily, and he might have made a big mistake. They certainly had a big fight and a cooling off period. But I think he realized that by the end of the season, that there’s something that he doesn’t want to let Emily go.”

“I don’t know what that means. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be together instantly or ever. I don’t know, but I think he feels there’s unfinished business with the two of them.”
