Deadline approaching for NSW assistant agents to extend their certificates

Eligible assistant agents in NSW have until June 22 to apply for an extension on their certificate of registration for a one-off, 12-month period.

In March 2020, substantial reforms were introduced to the Property and Stock Agents Act 2002, placing almost 22,500 assistant agents on a four-year certificate, which was due to expire on March 22 this year.

NSW Government legislated an extension to give the real estate industry more time to complete the qualifications for a Class 2 Agent licence.

Assistant Agents, with a certificate of registration that expired on March 22, can apply for the 12-month extension which applies to real estate stock and station and strata management.

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice (CPP41419) or the Certificate IV in Strata Community Management (CPP40516 or CPP40521).

NSW Fair Trading wrote to eligible assistant agents at the start of March this year, with details on how to complete the application.

If assistant agents do not extend their certificate, they will not be able to re-apply for another certificate for 12 months.

For those recent Class 2 Agent licence applications that are still being processed, you do not need to complete the application to extend your certificate.

Licensees in charge should ensure that assistant agents they supervise are enrolled in Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice (CPP41419) or Certificate IV in Strata Community Management (CPP40516 or CPP40521) and apply to extend their certificates by 22 June 2024.

Assistant agents with certificates that expired on or after 23 March 2024 cannot apply to extend their certificate online.

They may be able to submit an application form to NSW Fair Trading if they can meet the criteria for an extension based on exceptional circumstances.
